Mobile Broadband Headed Towards 21Mb Baseline Speed
Within the next couple of years, users can comfortably expect to get consistent download speeds of 21 Mb over mobile broadband services worldwide. This was the conclusion of a recent report by GSA- the Global mobile Suppliers Association.
Users rarely enjoy the speeds that are promised in the different ads of service providers. This has made them impervious to any exaggerated claims by providers. However, there has been some interest in recent times about the future of broadband, given that many discussions are taking place about LTE and HSPA+ technology.
In July, a GSA survey was conducted to determine the baseline speed during peak hours that is available from mobile broadband providers worldwide. It was found that on an average, 7.2 Mb download speed is reasonable expectation, given that many of the HSPA networks are able to sustain this speed. This speed is also manageable by a number of mobile devices.
Following the huge interest this survey generated, the GSA undertook another survey recently to determine the future baseline speed in this sector. The ten-week survey covered the views of industry insiders and arrived at the conclusion that an average 21 Mb speed can be considered to be the peak hour baseline once the next enhancement, which is HSPA+, is launched. This speed is expected to become a reality within the next two years.
Over the past year, industry gurus have been talking about speeds of 21 Mb, thus lending credence to the report’s findings. However, users are no longer focussed on speeds alone, as it appears from the survey. Many of those polled said that besides speed, other aspects of the service are also very critical, and these are to be taken into consideration while choosing a provider.
