Bathroom Lighting Zones Explained
Friday, May 21st, 2010Unlike other areas of the home, bathroom lighting is categorised by zones relating to where it can be placed. The zones, which are given an IP rating, relate to the risk of electric shock and the areas proximity to water. To ensure your bathroom lighting is as safe as possible, follow this simple guide to the lighting ratings. Zone 0 – IP1968: Watertight fittings that can be placed in baths, saunas and other areas submerged in water. They may be mounted underwater down to 9 meters. Zone 1 – IP65: Jet proof fittings that can be placed in areas that may be hit by a jet of water, such as that from a shower head. This is usually regarded as the area above Zone 0 but limited to 2.25m above the bath or shower. If a transformer is being used this must be located in zone 3. Zone 2 – IP44: Fittings that should be placed in areas that are liable to be splashed, such as by a water basin. This zone extends 0.6m horizontally and 2.25m vertically. As with previous zones, transformers should be placed in zone 3. Zone 3: Previously known as Zone 3, this area is now removed from classification and any light fittings can be used here. Notes: If the space underneath a bath cannot be accessed without using a tool, such as a screwdriver, that area is classed as un-zoned (like zone 3). All Pebble Grey’s illuminated mirrors conform to IP44 rating for safe installation into zone 2 of a bathroom, ensuring maximum protection.
