It is the dog days of summer, and here in North Carolina it is Hot and Steamy. I’m talking Tarzan jungle hot and humid. It is hot enough that I am making several adjustments to my exercise routine. I normally run outside every day, but this is the time of the year when I least appreciate it. Consequently I am using the elliptical trainer a few days a week, and the other days I head out for a real good sweat.

I’m one of those people who sweat profusely. By the time I am done my body and my gym clothes are soaked. This means I am draining some serious fluids, which is not a problem as long as I adequately replace them, and I monitor any abnormal physical symptoms.

Heat related illnesses are usually due to people ignoring the warning symptoms. They include weakness, dizziness, headaches, muscle cramps and nausea. This means you need to be aware of your mental state. What appears to be fatigue can progress to unconsciousness.

So I have been doing my research and have come up with a list of valuable suggestions to make certain you summer outdoor workouts are healthy and rewarding:

Stay Hydrated

Even in cooler temperatures, there is a tendency not to adequately replace expended body fluids. In the summer it is an absolute necessity. It is important to drink water or sports beverages before and after your workout. If you are engaging in extended outdoor exercise (running, walking, bicycling), replace fluids periodically. For runners, consider a hydration pack. If you do not maintain your fluid levels you risk circulatory failure.

If you are exercising for an hour or less, water is sufficient. Longer than an hour and you need to replace carbohydrates. Warmer weather metabolizes these substances faster. Consider one of the popular sports drinks that contain carbs.

Time of Day

When they are predicting some scourging weather, schedule your workout early in the morning or later in the evening. Avoid the mid-day heat and humidity. Workout indoors if that is the only time you have to exercise

Humidity

Be aware of the relative humidity. The body responds to overheating by the evaporation of moisture through perspiration. When the humidity is high, the air is less capable of evaporating excess moisture. Consequently your natural cooling mechanism is compromised. Monitor your vitals. If you start to feel light headed, or you feel completely drain, immediately stop, find a place to cool off and once again replace those vital fluids.

Cool Clothing

No, I am not talking about the latest fashions. When exercising in heat you do not want clothing that will retain heat. That includes cotton apparel. Go for synthetic breathable fabrics that release moisture from your body and allow efficient airflow. Hats are good for preventing the sun from heating up the blood vessels lining your scalp. But remove the hat occasionally to let the heat escape.
Problems of Pollution

Due to some misguided political policies and our desire to drive gas-guzzling vehicles, the air quality in urban environments in the summer often sucks. During days when there are orange, red or even purple alerts it is best to limit your outdoor activities. And air pollution is not limited to just cities. For example, the air quality in the mountains of North Carolina during the summer can be equivalent to the air in Los Angeles. The trees are actually dying in the high altitudes. Furthermore, the air quality in a number of our national parks and beaches can be potentially hazardous during the summer months. Excessive physical exertion in areas of poor air quality can be detrimental to your health.

The summer offers an incredible opportunity to enjoy the beauty of nature while you exercise. A walk or run on a tree-lined trail or sandy beach surely beats the congestion of a health club. But when it heats up outside use common sense and caution. And if those dog days of summer start barking consider heading indoors.

America is in deep trouble. Dead broke in fact. If America were a listed company, the plug would have been pulled long ago. The receivers would have checked out the books, pronounced the company dead and called time.

To listen to them you would be forgiven for believing all is hunky-dory. They have managed to stage a mock recovery in the stock market and even pulled the dollar back a tad from recent heavy falls.

But, believe me, this is a smokescreen, a scam, much like the tale of the emperor`s clothes. A great nation brought to its knees while its politicians look on, seemingly helpless.

Alas, it gets worse. You see, five separate events are gathering strength and, like a perfect storm, will soon converge, causing massive economic turmoil. All of which leads inexorably to a major economic downturn.

EVENT #1 – The “Twin Deficits” – the US Trade and Federal Budgets – spin mind-numbingly out of control and long-ago surpassed all records. To finance these deficits, the government relentlessly continues borrowing. Throughout history all great empires have collapsed, not at the hands of their enemies, but from within. They all went broke. It appears a tall task for America to avoid a similar fate.

EVENT #2 – A Dollar Collapse. Desperate for money the government turns to the printing press. The dollar bills get churned out, inflation takes hold, interest rates soar. No longer do the financial markets dissect the weekly money- supply figures. But the foreigners do. You can bet your boots alarm bells are ringing. They will stop lending, they will stop investing in US assets. Its been dropping for three years now. It will continue. The dollar is doomed.

EVENT #3 – Housing Bubble Finally Bursts. For some years easy money brought a runaway jump in prices to near ludicrous levels. But times-they-are-a-changing. Mortgage arrears grow, as do foreclosures. Across the nation prices are weakening. Higher interest rates bring increased mortgage repayments, causing further foreclosures. Prices decline more, bringing with it the dreaded “mortgage deficit” – the mortgage exceeds the house values. This brings on more home sales. And so it continues …

EVENT #4 – Job Losses Pile Up. As our glorious “Captains of Industry” close or down-size plants throughout America, lured by slave labor in China, massive lay-offs ensue. The government loudly boasts new jobs are being found. Yeah, right. A once well-paid factory job replaced with a low-paid job at a Walmart store near you or at Pizza Hut. Economists call this the “employment gap” and results in less disposable income. In turn company profits decline, more lay-offs … an endless cycle.

EVENT #5 – Stock Market Crash! Despite the best efforts of Wall Street`s finest to persuade you otherwise, the stock market is in trouble, there is no way back. With all the other events in play the market is poised to collapse. We shall be witnessing the mother of all crashes.

So what in the blazes can you do to protect yourself? In the second part of this article, I recommend five steps you should follow. In the meantime I would like to very briefly share one thought with you that will be greatly expanded upon in the next article:

Vitally, get a second income. Work for yourself. If your job disappears at least you have a safety net. If this means working all the spare time given you, tough! What you do is your decision. If you want to increase revenue using direct mail, you have two options: sell more to the customers you have, or find new customers and sell to them. The tricky part is knowing how to do that.

I recommend that you start by segmenting your house list. Dividing your customers into groups that share a common interest helps you understand your customers better. Let me illustrate.

Assume you are a business that manufactures and markets a line of polo and golf shirts that businesses issue to their staff as casual uniforms. You examine your house list to find out who buys what, and when and how. You are looking for patterns, trends and opportunities.

Gender
You discover that 75% of your customers buy shirts for male staff only, even though you carry a line of women’s shirts. There may be an opportunity here. You may be able to find customers in similar industries as your customers, but in businesses that are operated by women and that have female staff.

Industry
Looking at the SIC codes in your house file, you learn that a large percentage of your clients are retailers. This means you can look for other retailers in other industry segments that may also be interested in your product line.

Buying cycle
Another piece of data that you uncover is that a sizeable segment of your customer base prefers to have their shirts embroidered with their company logo or slogan. What do these customers have in common besides that? Are they in similar industries? Are they all involved in the hospitality industry? You may spot a new market for your products. Or find a way to upsell existing customers when they renew their orders.

Trends
You discover that one shirt is more popular this year than it was last year. Is this a fad? A trend? Look carefully and find out. Maybe you can capitalize on this new development to grow your business with existing and new customers.

Frequency
You also learn that many of your customers order their shirts in the Spring. Is this because the weather is growing warmer, because your Spring prices are always lower, or because your clients must hire all new staff each Spring? Each of these three reasons presents a different opportunity.

Payment method
Your customer database also tells you that the most popular payment method is cheque, followed by credit card and cash. The most popular medium is your catalog, followed by your website (although your website is growing in popularity). Are there opportunities here for reducing your promotional costs by moving your entire catalog online? Or for sending promotions by email instead of postal mail?

As you can see, the advantages of segmenting your customer database are great.

• you uncover opportunities for creating special offers for unique segments of your list
• you discover trends that help you modify your product line
• you gather the knowledge you need to make intelligent decisions about which prospect lists to rent
• you discover potential markets that you had not even considered before

So the big question is then ‘how does one become more resourceful?’ Like many of the skills of the entrepreneur, resourcefulness requires constant cultivation. However, if you can develop this one skill the payoff will greatly exceed the cost!

Below are 4 simple strategies you can put into practice to increase your resourcefulness;

1. Manage Your State.

The best way to gain access to an increased level of personal resources is by managing your state of mind and being. If you are feeling lousy, chances are the internal resources that you are able to tap into are going to be pretty lousy as well. If you are in good physical condition, well rested, fed and hydrated, your ability to push yourself towards the destiny you desire vastly increases.

Develop awareness around what pushes you into both productive and unproductive states. Then if you really want to be more resourceful, make the simple decision to do more of the things that inspire your productivity and less of the things that don’t. One of the disciplines I personally follow, is exercising first thing in the morning before I do anything else. If I miss a day, the difference in my energy levels and consequently my resourcefulness is profound.

2. Seek Out Expert Resources.

Your ability to succeed in business is largely influenced by your ability to gain access to expert knowledge. The secret here is that you don’t actually have to be the one that has that knowledge! You just need to be able to know when and where to find it.

Make a habit out of leveraging the experience and expertise of others. Meet with these people in person or access their knowledge through their books, CDs/DVDs, coaching programs and workshops if they offer them. You’ll be amazed at the transformational effect it can have on your business.

3. Develop Relationships with Connectors.

Connectors are the very special people who seem to know everyone and who are described at length in Malcolm Gladwell’s groundbreaking book ‘The Tipping Point’. Chances are if you are experiencing any form of business challenge a connector will be able to put you in touch with someone who can help you. Connectors are resourceful purely due to their ability to tap into the resourcefulness of others. Their desire and willingness to share their resources can often have a profound impact upon the resourcefulness of those around them.

4. Share Your Resources.

If you want to gain access to the expert resources of others you have to be known as someone who actively shares their expertise, knowledge and resources. Remember that you are not in a school playground anymore. There are no prizes for keeping your toys to yourself!

If you are looking to develop an abundant existence through business, become someone who solves other people’s problems. Brainstorm ways you can continually increase the number of people you impact in this world, charge a fair price and then watch your business take off!

Arranging a mortgage is seen as the standard method by which individuals and businesses can purchase residential and commercial real estate without the need to pay the full value immediately. Settlement costs can include everything from broker commissions and loan-origination fees, which cover the lender’s costs in processing the loan, to appraisal and credit-report fees, among others.
